Bay Area Vintage Base Ball at San Quentin Athletics

Baseball has been at San Quentin since the 1920’s. Since 1994, SQ Baseball has welcomed teams from the outside to play their incarcerated ball club. Of the 6,000 inmates, the SQ baseball club consists of 24 individuals.

Our first trip to San Quentin was after the conclusion of our 2018 season. Seven total Pelicans made the trip with other ballists from B.A.V.B.B. For the inmates, this was their very first introduction to 1886 base ball. This life changing experience introduced us to the rehabilitation program and started our partnership with the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. At the time, the Oakland Athletics provided support to the program in regards to uniforms, baseball equipment and gear, hence the San Quentin A’s moniker.

The A’s had an undefeated season in 2018. In this match, we split the squad between each other to teach the 1886 game. If your team is interested in supporting this program and volunteering in the San Quentin Rehabilitation Baseball program, contact the Pels at pelicanssf@gmail.com or send us a message on our Contact Us page.
